St. Gregory the Great commenting on the dogs licking the sores of Lazarus: "Often in Holy Scripture, preachers are designated by dogs. For a dog's tongue, when it licks a wound, heals it. And so when we confess our sins, the holy teachers instruct us, as though touching the wounds of our minds with their tongues."
