St. Anthony of Egypt, Abbot

The memorial of St. Anthony and the Epistle for his Mass today reminds us of what we are apt to forget, in fact what we try very hard to forget, namely, that it is not politics, not General Synod, not the culture in which we live, not anything  external to each of us which is the front line of the battles we fight but we are the front line, our heart, our soul and our mind. We and ‘our unruly wills and affections’ are the problem.

We are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12
